The family of Kubiat Akpan, a prospective member of the National Youth Service Corps who died in a police cell in Akwa Ibom State, has demanded the arrest and prosecution of all the policemen who participated in the alleged torture of their son.

Akpan, a 28-year-old graduate of Architecture from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom, was arrested at Eni Stores by a team of policemen led by one Micheal Joweigha, and later tortured to death in detention.

Joweigba, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has since been arrested and detained.

The family’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, at a media briefing attended by members of the family at the D’angelo Hotel, Uyo, on Wednesday, demanded that the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division, Ewet Housing, be suspended, while the command’s spokesman, Odiko Macdon, be removed from office for allegedly lying against the deceased.

He also called on the state Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme, to visit the deceased’s family to condole with them.

“We demand that all the police officers who took part in this murder, not only Michael Joweigha, should be arrested immediately and prosecuted. It will amount to no justice for a single officer to be prosecuted for an offence that was committed by a team of police officers.

“The PPRO, Odiko Macdon, should be removed for lying against a graduate murdered by the police, who just struggled to graduate. Even this morning, he (Macdon) went to Comfort FM to tell lies.

“He was talking about an armed robbery that never existed. The only time when this country will be better is when public officers are held accountable. We are not talking about compensation yet,” the lawyer added.

He claimed that the police officers, after torturing the victim to death, attempted to conceal the murder, adding that a call the victim put across to his aunt thwarted the plan.
