Ex-international Garba Lawal has warned fans not to put pressure on CSKA Moscow winger Chidera Ejuke by comparing him with the legendary Austin Okocha.
The left-winger has been in sublime form for both club and country and was the only standout player in the Super Eagles shock 1-0 defeat to Central African Republic in the 2022 World Cup qualifier at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Despite the Eagles’ defeat, the ex-Heerenveen star won the heart of fans with his impressive performance, moving past the Wild Beasts defenders like a hot knife through butter.
His brilliant solo run in the latter stages of the game earned him comparison with former Eagles captain, Okocha, from the fans.
However, in a chat with PUNCH Sports Extra, Lawal stressed that the 23-year-old, despite his qualities and skills, should not be compared to Okocha.
“Ejuke is a fantastic player, but what is important is consistency and continuity. When you play a game today, you have to step up in the next game.
“He is a player that will progress on a weekly basis if he can continue to perform at this level but one thing I want people to know is that Jay Jay will always be Jay Jay and there is only one of his kind, just as we have only one Etim Esin.
“We have only one Tarila Okorowanta, Segun Odegbami, Ndubuisi Okosieme, Tajudeen Oyekanmi among others. These are former internationals that dribbled from flanks.
“I believe Ejuke has his abilities and qualities, and there is no doubt that he is a very talented player. We don’t have to put pressure on him by comparing him to Okocha at this moment. Okocha is exceptional and something else entirely, so we should just wish him (Ejuke) well in the near future.”
Ejuke, on Tuesday, retained his award as CSKA Moscow’s Player of The Month for September.
