The Ondo State Government has started the evaluation of destitute, beggars and streets urchins in Akure, the state capital.

The exercise, which commenced on Sunday, was said to be continuous as the government said it was part of its avowed commitment to protect citizens of the state .

Speaking on the exercise, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Foluke Tunde-Daramola, said  persons affected by the evaluation had been posing security threats to residents of the state.

She said, “Prior to the evacuation, there was an interactive session between the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and other stakeholders in Ondo State, including Head of Service, Mr Niran Adeyemo, and religious institutions, to ensure that street urchins, beggers and destitutes are rid of the streets.

“After the sensitisation, the ministry in adherence to the directive of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu embarked on evacuation of the street urchins, beggars and destitute in Akure and the government will replicate same gesture across the major cities of the state. Those evacuated will be  kept under government’s care for monitoring.”
