In this report, ’TOSIN OLUWALOWO looks at highs and lows of Gernot Rohr’s reign as Super Eagles coach

HIGHS

Qualifying Nigeria for the AFCON and World Cup with game to spare

Before Rohr became Super Eagles manager, the team failed to qualify for the 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The Franco-German however qualified for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt with a game to spare after playing a 1-1 draw against South Africa away from home.

The Eagles also qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia with a game to spare. For many fans, Rohr erased the era of permutations and using calculators to know if the Eagles would be in major tournaments or not by qualifying early.

He has recorded 28 wins in 54 games – winning 28 and losing 13 with 13 draws.

Not losing an away World Cup and AFCON qualifier

Since becoming Eagles coach, Rohr is yet to lose any qualifying game both in the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers away from home.

Good winning ratio

Out of the 54 games he has coached the national team, Rohr has won 28, giving him a win ratio of 51.85 per cent. This is better than Sunday Oliseh (42.82 per cent), Stephen Keshi (40.91 per cent) and Samson Siasia (50 per cent) who were all managers before him.

Won AFCON bronze

Rohr led the Eagles to win the bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt after earlier losing the semi-final 1-0 against Algeria. The AFCON feat convinced the Nigeria Football Federation to renew his contract with the Eagles.

Given free hand to operate

Unlike many Eagles coaches before him, Rohr was given a free hand by the Nigeria Football Federation to operate. This includes his choice of players to invite, including his decision to almost shut out Nigeria Professional Football League players from the national team.

LOWS

Losing 2-1 to Argentina to crash out of 2018 World Cup

Many fans still blame Rohr for Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the second round of the 2018 World after losing 2-1 to Argentina in their final group game, a game many believed the Eagles should have won.

Not playing attractive football

Even though Rohr has been able to lead the Eagles to win games, many believe he isn’t giving the fans what the Eagles are known for, which is attractive football. Rohr has been accused by many fans of playing what they tag “kick and follow football”.

Losing two home qualifier home games

Despite not losing any qualifier away from home, Rohr has lost two at home, the first against South Africa in Uyo in 2016 and recently the shocking loss to Central African Republic in the 2022 World Cup qualifier at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos in October.

Lack of trust in home-based player

Unlike Stephen Keshi who won the AFCON with some home-based players in 2013, Rohr has never believed in the local league players, only inviting a paltry number for Eagles games. Rohr further courted controversy in June when he refused to coach the home-based Eagles in their friendly game against Mexico.

Owed months of salaries

The Franco-German has continuously been owed his salary by the NFF. At a point, he was owed as much as eight months before the NFF started paying installementally, presently, he is still being owed for two months.
