The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said it is getting set to review five regulations on customer care in the power sector in a bid to protect consumers.

NERC said on Thursday that it had the mandate to protect stakeholders’ interests in the Nigerian electricity supply industry, adding that it had approved some regulations to protect electricity customers’ rights and specify their obligations.

It disclosed this in a document, titled ‘Invitation to consultations on the review of customer care regulations and enlightenment on the new metering regulation’, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja.

According to the regulator, the five regulations include Customer Complaints Handling Standard and Procedures Regulations, 2006; and Meter Reading, Billing, Cash Collections and Credit Management for Electricity Supplies Regulations, 2007.

Others are Customer Service Standard of Performance for Distribution Companies, 2007; Connection and Disconnection Procedures for Electricity Services,

2007; and Methodology for the Determination of Connection Charges for Electricity Supply Regulations 2012.

“Developments in the Nigeria electricity supply industry have necessitated a review of these regulations to reflect the current reality,” the NERC said.

The commission said as part of measures to close the wide metering gap in the industry and working with other stakeholders, it developed a new Meter Asset Provider-National Mass Metering Programme Regulation.

It said a consultation would hold on the benefits of the new regulations this month.

“Expected at these meetings are consumer advocacy groups, electricity customers’ associations, customer care, regulatory officers and stakeholders in NESI,” the NERC said.
